Hydrocephalus is caused by a buildup of fluid inside the skull, which can increase pressure and cause damage to the brain. Hydrocephalus can occur if the flow of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is blocked, if the body produces too much CSF, or if there is a problem with the arachnoid villi which stops CSF being absorbed into the blood. These signs occur sooner in adults, whose skulls are no longer able to expand to accommodate the increasing fluid volume within. Fetuses, infants, and young children with hydrocephalus typically have an abnormally large head, excluding the face, because the pressure of the fluid causes the individual skull bones—which have yet to fuse—to bulge outward at their juncture points .
